On Wednesday evening the Wrexham Supporter’s Trust voted at a special WST meeting to buy their ailing football club. The WST board will now conclude its negotiations with current club owners Ian Roberts and Geoff Moss and submit its plans to the football authorities.
Earlier this month Wrexham FC were forced to cancel two pre-season friendlies after the players weren’t paid and, far more seriously, the club faced expulsion from the Football Conference unless they found £250,000 within days. The fans somehow raised £100,000 within 24 hours to stave off disaster whilst the neighbouring Glyndwr University bought the ground and its Colliers Park training facilities. The four conditions set by the Conference have now been met.
Ironically Wrexham now join bitter local rivals Chester as a community run club and it is hoped that the area’s dire fortunes may soon become a thing of the past as its football clubs reside in the hands of those who have their best interests at heart – the supporters.
