Palermo players celebrate a memorable opening day scalp.

Following a player’s strike the Italian season finally got underway this weekend with Palermo’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Inter taking the headlines. Despite losing six of their stars from last term – including the sublime Pastore and three Italian internationals – the Sicilian club grabbed two late goals to stun last year’s runners-up. The only bright note for the Milanese side was their dubutant Diego Forlan got off the mark.

Juventus meanwhile hammered Parma 4-1 to suitably christen their impressive new stadium whilst Roma were surprise fall guys to Cagliari losing 2-1 at home.
