Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has revealed that Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero is to retire at the end of this season. The 36-year old maestro considered bringing the curtain down on a long and extraordinary career this summer but was persuaded to stay on, lured by the attraction of playing in the Turin club’s new stadium.

Though still captain Del Piero has been restricted to bit-parts where once he took centre stage and it is perhaps not surprising that he has reached such a decision.

He will however forever remain a cast-iron legend at a club where he holds the all-time goalscoring record and a country that he led to World Cup success in 2006.

The rest of us will remember him respectfully as one of the greatest number 10s of the modern age.
