Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has threatened to resign unless he is offered a new long-term deal. The 73-year old’s contract is due to expire in April and the no-nonsense Italian – the most successful coach in Serie A history – has made it very clear to the FAI that unless that is extended to the 2014 World Cup finals he is prepared to walk, even if Ireland proceed past Estonia in the forthcoming play-off and qualify for Euro 2012. Using a translator he told Irish Central Sport, “We can qualify and go to the tournament when the contract automatically extends and we do the tournament. Or we can qualify and say, ok if there is no extension then our job is done.”
