The Confederations Cup may have produced some scintillating drama but if it’s giant-killing you’re after the CONCACAF Gold Cup is the summer tournament to follow.

Already on its opening day we’ve seen two upsets with Canada succumbing late on to Martinique whilst the much fancied Mexico were shocked by Panama in a thrilling encounter.

El Tri may have entered the competition with inexperienced, domestic-based players but they still had high hopes of securing a third straight Gold Cup, hopes that have now been severely dented by Gabriel Torres’ double.

They now face a much-win clash with the Canadians with one likely to have their chances of reaching the quarters dashed with a game still to play.

Panama’s brilliant achievement will have given fellow minnows Belize encouragement ahead of their game with USA tomorrow but even with such inspiration surely the team ranked 130 by FIFA stand little chance against superior opposition. Or do they? With this year’s CONCACAF it looks like all bets are off and form books can be discarded. Which makes the viewing, cheering and soccer betting all the more exciting.
