John Whitehead looks back on a season of attacking intent and defensive dominance for champions Chelsea.
How did your club fare compared to your pre-season hopes/expectation?
I was excited by the acquisitions of Costa and Fabregas and thought we would have a good chance but more so in Europe. In the end we walked the league having been at the top for a record 274 days!
2014/15 highlight?
The 6-3 demolition of Everton at Goodison. A statement of attacking intent and Costa, Fabregas and Hazard were awesome
Season’s low point?
5-3 at Spuds!
Player of the year
Hazard and Fabregas were excellent but I think the defence excellence was down to John Terry who was superb throughout the season
Was there a particular goal/moment that got you out of your seat?
Shirley’s goal v Burnley….movement, super run coupled with precision passing
Player you’d be happiest see leave this summer
Mr Square!
Want your manager to still be in charge next term?
Yes please!
You can go back in time and offer the gaffer one bit of advice prior to the season just gone based on what you know is to come. What would it be?
Don’t effectively swap Square for Shirley….we all loved Shirley
Which opposing player received the loudest boos and which opposing player impressed you the most?
Gerrard, obviously
Kane as he bossed Cahill big time and as a result Zouma was given more game time but it did allow Cahill to rest up and reform what was a crucial and excellent defensive partnership with the back four.
If at all, how did the media’s portrayal of your club in 2014/15 differ from the reality?
Mourinho plays the media in a similar way to Sir Alex with perhaps a bit more intellect! The interview on Sky with Ben Shepherd and Kammy was exquisite! However he does it in the right way to deflect attention from either the result or his players and centres on himself which is great for the media and the proof is in the pudding – he won the league!
