Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has spoken in glowing terms about the future of the Blues’ young star Phil Foden amidst concerns that the England Under 17 World Cup winner may struggle to break past established talent at the Etihad.
“Possibly one of the greatest signings Man City have ever made is David Silva, and Phil plays in his position so it’s not going to be easy to get into the starting XI on a regular basis but Phil can be Silva’s successor definitely.”
Lescott, speaking exclusively to 888sport, has been greatly impressed with the emergence of the midfielder, nicknamed the ‘Stockport Iniesta’ for his vision and ability on the ball, and has been more than satisfied with the level of progress made so far from a player expected to become a household name in years to come.
“He’s pretty much making the bench every week, which is a credit to him at 17 at Man City and being able to keep the top stars off the bench is all down to him. Phil Foden is here to stay.”
“There are no givens or easy rides at Man City. You’re not just given the opportunity because you’re a local lad or because you’re left-footed. You have to have the mentality that you are worthy of training with the first-team every day and on top of that you have to have the quality in order to sustain that level of consistency.”
Now back in the City fold managing the club’s loan stars Lescott has no doubts that Foden won’t be on his rota anytime soon, not only praising the teenager’s stellar talent but his mind-set too.
“Phil has the mentality to want to be at Man City first and foremost; to be in that environment. You have to want to improve every day otherwise you don’t train with Pep’s teams.”
